John Berry Obituary

John Peter “Pete” Berry, 83, of Oil City, PA, died peacefully on Thursday, April 4, 2024, at his home. Born on August 16, 1940, in Plumer, PA, Pete was the son of the late John and Charlotte Greer Berry.

Pete was a graduate of Oil City High School. He was married on April 22, 1961, to the former Gwendolyn “Gwen” Best and she survives.

Pete was a truck driver for 28 years for Lyons Transportation (LTL) and later retired from PennDot, where he worked for the road maintenance department.

Mr. Berry attended the Plumer United Methodist Church for many years and was a member of Grace United Methodist Church.

Pete enjoyed gardening, hunting, going to trout camp, meeting friends at the YMCA and riding trails with his four-wheeling crew. He also loved his Chevy Tahoe, but he hated the gas mileage.

Pete was a 50-year member of the Masonic Lodge, a member of the Valley of Oil City, the Scottish Rite and the Venango Lodge of Perfection. He was also a lifelong member of the NRA (National Rifle Association).

In addition to his wife, Pete is survived by five sons: Mike Berry and his wife Becky (Knight) of Reno, Moe Berry and his wife Traci (Karns), Tom Berry and his wife Kim (Coogan), Tim Berry and his fiancée Leslie Cochran, all of Oil City, and Chad Berry and his wife Stacey (McLaughlin) of Venus. Pete is also survived by 8 grandchildren: Travis Berry, Emily Shaffer and her husband Adam, Rachel Bish and her husband Tanner, Tayler Marterella and her husband Nathan, Tanner Berry, Tifany Berry, Reece Berry and Tyler Berry. He’s also survived by 6 great grandchildren, a nephew, Dave McClintock and a niece, Marie McClintock.

In addition to his parents, Pete was preceded in death by his sister, Joanne McClintock, and niece, Amy McClintock.

A private family visitation will be held at the convenience of the family. The Reinsel Funeral Home is in charge of the arrangements. Memorials may be made to the Venango County Humane Society and condolences may be sent through www.reinselfuneralhome.com.

The Berry family extends special thanks to Jody Bialo and her wonderful in-home aide staff of TLC (Tender Loving Care) and Lisa Winger of Asera Care.

Known for his “Pete-isms”, Pete left us all with one piece of advice: “Keep your powder dry!”  Rest in Peace, Pete.
