Henry J. Gates

Henry John Gates  99 of 108 Spruce St. Oil City, PA died at 4:45 P.M.  Tuesday March 25, 2014 at Sugar Creek Station after a period of declining health.

                Born in Oil City, PA on Feb. 1, 1915 son of the late George and Anna Burden Gates.

                Mr. Gates attended Oil City Area Schools.

                He had been employed by the Pennsylvania, Penn Central and Conrail Railroads for 35 years and was a member of the  Transit Workers Union  of the AFL-CIO.

                Mr. Gates was the oldest member of St. Joseph Church in Oil City.

                He had been a member of the Penna. National Guard.

                Mr. Gates also  enjoyed bowling and hunting  and was a Penguins and Steelers  fan.

                Henry was married in St. Joseph Church on April 13, 1940 to the former Veronica ( Vera ) Megic, by the late Fr. P. A. Lynch  and she survives along with three children…

• 5 grandchildren, 4 great grandchildren and 2 great great grandchildren  and several nieces and nephews also survive.

He was preceded by  1 son Robert Gates, a brother George Gates Jr. and a sister Anna Marie Samol.

There will be a private funeral service at the Reinsel Funeral Home & Crematory , Fr. Justin P. Pino ,Pastor of St. Joseph Church will preside. Entombment will  follow in the Bishop McManaman Memorial Mausoleum.

Memorials in his name may be made to St. Joseph Church Development Fund 35 Pearl Ave. Oil City, PA.
