Charles Sowers Obituary

Charles “Wendell” Sowers, 93,of Oil City, PA., died June 27, 2025 after a sudden illness.

            Born May 23, 1932 in Brookville, PA., he was the son of the late Charles and Bernice Sowers.

He graduated from high school in Brooklyn, PA., 1951, and served in the United States Army during the Korean War.

He and Nancy Boyles were married on Nov. 18, 1952 and they remained devoted to each other for over 67 years, until her passing in April of 2020.

On Oct. 6,, 1956 their beloved son, Scott, was born and the three of them developed a unique bond they carried together until his passing following a tragic car accident in 1983.

Mr. Sowers worked at various over the years. He was as assistant manager at Riverside Grocery, a salesman for Prudential Insurance and as a steelworker at Oilwell Supply and Franklin Steel.

Wendell was a devoted member of the First Presbyterian Church serving numerous capacities including usher and church deacon.

He was a very sociable person, who was well known around Oil City and loved by so many. He was always ready with a smile and a wave and cheered up those he delivered Meals on Wheels to each week.

Wendell was a member of the Acacia Grotto, the VFW and the Pulaski Club, as well as the PNA, Eagles and Elks, where he volunteered on a regular basis.

Wendell was dedicated to watching the Pittsburgh Steelers and the Penguins.

He enjoyed traveling, spending time with family and friends, especially his cherished granddaughter, Tasha and great granddaughter Ayla.

Wendell liked golfing and spent many hours on the golf course with his favorite golfer, Nancy.

He also enjoyed gardening and was known for having a backyard garden that other gardeners envied. He was a great cook and made relishes and soups with his own produce. His family and friends always looked forward to harvest time.

He is survived by his granddaughter Tasha Ross, and her husband Chad and their daughter Ayla.

He is also survived by nephew Mike Boyles (Kalyne), his niece June Boyles Moorhead(Frank) with whom he and Nancy spent many days “on the road” in the pursuit of laughter and fun.

An additional niece and  nephews are Bob Boyles(Mary), Tom Boyles(Debbie), Steven Johann (Mary Beth), Patty Somade (Femi), Van Johann, and many great nieces and great nephews.

In addition to his parents, wife and son, he was preceded in death by brothers Harold and Bobby and sister Beverly Ann Byerly, a nephew Mark Boyles and a niece Nancy Boyles.

There will be no visitation.

Private Funeral services will take place at the convenience of the family.

Interment in Lamey Cemetery.

Memorials may be made to the Oil City First Presbyterian Church.
