George McCartney Obituary

George C. McCartney, 87, from Oil City, Pennsylvania, and formerly of Chesapeake, Virginia, passed away Wednesday, May 29, 2024, after a short illness.

Born December 11, 1936 in Oil City, Pennsylvania, he was the son of Harry J. McCartney and Gertrude Stoudt McCartney Dechant.

George attended Oil City Schools, after which he enlisted in the U.S. Army Reserves, then later the U.S. Navy where he served as a sailor for more than 22 years.  George was a proud sailor but was most proud of his service aboard the USS Boston from August 1955 to August 1956 and February 1965 to April 1966, the USS Newport News from March 1961 to January 1962, the USS Wright from April 1966 to June 1967, and the USS C.V. Ricketts from August 1970 to February 1974. He retired from the Navy on March 1, 1977 as a Chief Yeoman (E7). His awards and decorations include the Navy Unit Commendation, the Navy Good Conduct Medal (6 awards), the Navy Expeditionary Medal, the National Defense Service Medal, and the Armed Forces Expeditionary Medal. 

After retiring from the Navy, George managed the Ace Hardware Store in Kempsville, Virginia.

George was married to the love of his life, Kathy E. McCartney, who preceded him in death.  They had one daughter, Christine McCartney Craven, who also preceded him in death. 

George enjoyed antiques and collectables, walking, and spending time with his family upon his return to Oil City. He was devoted to family and loved them all and was especially generous to those who needed help.

He is survived by one sister, Phyllis King of Oil City, and one brother, John Dechant of Cooperstown, and by numerous nieces and nephews.

In addition to his wife and daughter, he was preceded in death by brothers Dave McCartney, Robert McCartney, Harry James McCartney, Clarence Dechant, and sisters Joyce Bower, and Frances Lamey.

A memorial service will be held on August 9, 2024 at 11:00 A.M. in the Reinsel Funeral Home.

  His remains will be interred with his wife and daughter in Chesapeake, Virginia.
