George Robert Teeter, 97, of Oil City, passed away Saturday morning, January 4, 2025, after an extended illness.
Born May 28, 1927 in Oil City, he was a son of the late Edgar and Elizabeth Vincent Teeter.
His family was among the earliest settlers of Venango County.
George was a life-long resident of Oil City and graduated from Oil City High School in 1945.
Following in the footsteps of many of his ancestors, he served in the military with the U.S. Navy and was stationed in Hawaii after Pearl Harbor was attacked. When poor eyesight forced him to abandon his dream to be an airplane pilot, he resorted to building and flying hi sown model airplanes, some with wingspans of several feet.
George worked as an inspector for the Pennsylvania Highway Department and then as a draftsman and designing engineer for Joy Manufacturing Company in Franklin. While at Joy he studied engineering at Pennsylvania State University, and he developed many patents for improving the safety and efficiency of coal mining machinery, often working directly in the mines to troubleshoot issues.
A long-time hunter and fisherman, George even made hi sown bows, arrows, guns and bullets, and later had a passion for tying elaborate flies for fishing. He shared a hunting lodge with several friends who accompanied him on yearly treks to fish in Canada. He was a skilled carpenter and mechanic. There wasn’t anything he couldn’t build or fix.
In younger days he enjoyed participating in golf, baseball, softball and bowling, and then watching his children and grandchildren who were very active in local sports. An avid sports enthusiast, he especially loved watching the Pittsburgh Steelers and Pirates. In his spare time, he was always either reading a book or working on a crossword puzzle. Even in his nineties, his mind was “sharp as a pin”.
George married the former Dorothy Jane Remus on April 30, 1948 in Oil City.
They were members of Christ Episcopal Church in Oil City and involved with many youth activities at the church when raising their children. A gifted artist, he put his talents to good use by creating paintings for the church, often using his own family members as models for the religious scenes.
